About Dalmatian Jasper
Often referred to as the “Stone of Joy,” Dalmatian Jasper is a variety of quartz characterized by its creamy base and distinct black tourmaline spots. It gets its name simply because its unique spotted pattern looks exactly like the coat of a Dalmatian dog.
What is it actually?
Geologically speaking, “Dalmatian Jasper” is a bit of a misnomer. While it’s marketed as a jasper, it’s actually a type of igneous rock (specifically a variety of perthite) primarily composed of:
White/Cream Base: Mostly a mix of quartz and feldspar (albite).
Black Spots: They are actually inclusions of a rare mineral called Arfvedsonite (or sometimes Black Tourmaline).
Where does it come from?
Nearly all of the world’s Dalmatian Jasper is mined in the Chihuahua region of Mexico. Because it is an igneous rock formed from cooling magma, it is quite durable, making it perfect for the 8mm beads used in your mala.
