How to Design Your Custom Mala

Thank you for considering a custom mala from BuddhistMala.com. Every custom mala is individually handcrafted by Dawn in Boulder, Colorado using premium natural gemstones, traditional knotting techniques, and over 20 years of experience creating meditation jewelry.

Each mala is made to order with thoughtful attention to craftsmanship and detail. Most custom orders are completed within 1 to 2 weeks, although many are finished in about one week depending on our production schedule.

Design Your Mala

You can use our easy DIY order form here. We can also offer a design consultation, we’ll help you create a mala that supports your mantra practice, personal style and preferences.

1. Choose Your Main Beads

Select your favorite natural gemstone or wood beads from our available collection. You may also choose accent or marker beads to create a unique pattern.

2. Select the Mala Finish

Choose the finishing style that best suits your design.

3. Select Your Accents

Personalize your mala with your choice of:

Gold-tone spacers
Silver-tone spacers
No metal spacers

4. Choose Your Size

Our traditional meditation malas contain 108 beads. Custom lengths may also be available upon request.

Design Approval for Premium Knotted Malas

Before your mala is permanently hand knotted, we will send you a photo of the completed bead layout for approval. This gives you the opportunity to request small adjustments before the design is finalized.

Once knotting has begun, the design cannot be changed.

Natural Materials

Every gemstone is unique. Variations in color, pattern, translucency, and natural inclusions are part of the beauty of genuine stone and make every mala one of a kind.

Some gemstones, guru beads, and specialty components may occasionally be unavailable. If this happens, we will contact you to discuss suitable alternatives before proceeding.

Redesigns & Restringing

If your design preferences change in the future, or your mala needs restringing after years of use, we are happy to help.

Current service pricing:

Unknotted mala restringing or redesign: $45 plus shipping
Hand knotted mala restringing or redesign: $75 plus shipping

Additional Information

Because each mala is made specifically for you, custom orders cannot be redesigned once the process has begun. Our gemstone selection is extensive, although availability may occasionally vary. If a requested materials or design is unavailable and no suitable alternative can be found, you may cancel your order for a refund less administrative costs (Custom consult fee of $30 plus cancellation fees) before production begins. Please note that natural gemstones vary in color, pattern, and inclusions, making every finished mala beautifully one of a kind, so we request some flexibility with natural materials and availability, we can not always honor “exact” visions but will offer our best! If you have a special vision, meaningful color palette, or wish to commemorate an important person, milestone, or meditation journey, we would be honored to create a custom mala that is uniquely yours.

Custom Order Policy

Because every custom mala is handcrafted specifically for you, custom orders are generally not eligible for return or refund.

If you would like to make changes after receiving your mala, we are happy to offer our redesign service using your existing materials whenever possible. Return shipping and redesign service fees apply.
