Hello folks, this is Dawn Boiani-Sandberg from Sakura Designs at BuddhistMala.com, and I have some exciting news about our new Easy DIY Buddhist Mala Making Kit. We offer a do-it-yourself (DIY) Mala making kit, and we’ve been selling them for quite a long time. Over the years, since we established our company, people have wanted to be able to make their own malas. It’s kind of a meditation practice and it’s very intimate. It’s rewarding to take the time to string each bead and create something you can use for personal meditation and mantra practice.
We have a lot of different Mala materials to choose from. Over the years, we’ve refined our kits based on feedback from our customers regarding what has been difficult or easy to use. Recently, I had an epiphany and reformatted the way we offer our Mala making kits. It is now much easier to use.
Our new kit includes a nylon-corded thread with a needle already attached, eliminating the need for threading. Previously, adding a knot after each bead was a challenge. Knotting can be difficult—sometimes you might run out of cord, the cord can fray or snap, or it might knot itself. Feedback indicated that knotting after each bead was a common struggle, which we also experienced. In Asia, where much of our knotting work is done, the process is handled by dexterous professionals. However, it has been challenging for many of our customers here.
To address these issues, our DIY kit now includes primary beads and small seed beads that act as knots between each primary bead. This gives the appearance of a carefully knotted Mala, but with a seed bead in between each bead, simplifying the process. Additionally, we now offer high-quality, ready-made tassels with loops. Once you string your Mala, you can simply attach the pre-made tassel.
Here’s how you use the new kit:
- Cut the top of the Griffin nylon cord, pull out the needle, and leave a few inches at the end. Tighten it by wrapping it around a few times.
- Pre-stretch the cord to avoid slack.
- Begin with the primary bead and continue adding beads with the seed bead knots at the start and end of the Mala.
- Use seed beads to emulate knots, making the process easier and quicker.
- Once halfway through, string the three-hole Guru bead and attach the ready-made tassel.
As you continue, periodically check the count to ensure accuracy. If you find extra beads or mistakes, correct them before moving on. When you reach the end, ensure that the marker beads are parallel and that everything is correct. Use a lighter and sharp scissors to secure the knots, and consider adding a drop of glue for extra security.
Once finished, you’ll have a beautiful Mala with properly placed knots and a ready-made tassel. The Mala clip included can be used to count mantra recitations by moving it along the Mala after each set of recitations.
Thank you for your support over the years. We hope you enjoy the new and improved DIY Mala making kit.
